E-codes: An overview of assigning external causes of
injury, including a 2010 update
This session will provide HIM professionals
with an overview of the External Causes of
Injury and Poisoning section of ICD-9-CM.
How to use the alphabetic index and tabular
lists effectively will be discussed. Common
and important definitions will be
highlighted. This session will include a
2010 update of the new E code activity
codes. Attendees will be able to confidently
assign Place of Occurrence E codes. Gray,
confusing and difficult causes will be
discussed and explained. Examples will be
used to demonstrate logic of assignment.

Director MIS\Trauma Registry PA Trauma Systems Foundation Nathan is a graduate of the Health
Information Management program at the
University of Pittsburgh. He has worked for
the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation
for more than nine years and is currently
the Director of MIS and Trauma Registry.
Prior to working for the Foundation, Nathan
was a CPT-4 and ICD-9 coding consultant for
Quadramed.
